The beagle is a hunting dogtasked with tracking scents in a pack. It is alert (but not watchful). Generally, these dogs are friendly and neither aggressive nor shy. They love human company. They adapt well to a new owner and are usually social with other dogs.
Beagles need enough exercise(an adult dog sixty to ninety minutes a day). They arestubborn dogs.
Sense of Smell
Beagles have one of the best sense of smell of any dog breed. Bloodhounds and Basset Hounds are their only competitors for the top scenting ability. Scientists John Paul Scott and John Fuller are very famous for a 13-year study in which they placed dogs of all breeds with a mouse in a field of 1 hectare, and measured how long it took each dog to find the mouse. Beagles could find the mouse in less than a minute. Fox Terriers spent 15 minutes searching for the mouse and some other dogs couldn’t find the mouse at all.
One important thing to note is that Beagles are ideal for ground scent. They do not excel as much in air scent.
Air scent can, for example, be useful for rescue teams in the mountains. It is believed that the long ears and large lips of the Beagle help to hold scents near the nose.
It is very important to know that your puppy will constantly be distracted by scent trails and that after following a scent, it can lose itself in its own mind for hours because it is bred for long hunts. Although we definitely do not breed for hunting instinct.
Beagles are not only great additions to families, but they can also be wonderful companions for singles or couples (as long as the singles or couples enjoy being outdoors and can provide their dogs with enough exercise and playtime). They love any opportunity to use their noses, which is why time outside is so important.
Beagles are poor guard dogs because of their friendly nature, and they can easily be won over by people, even if they are initially reserved. However, they are good watchdogs due to their loud voices and howling.
Because they were bred for long hunts, they are quite determined dogs. This trait can be challenging to handle if your Beagle ignores you in favor of something he has set his mind on. Additionally, this can make him difficult to train.
Like some other dogs, he can exhibit selective deafness. This seems beneficial during a hunt, allowing dogs to stay focused on their scent trails. Outside of hunting, however, it can be difficult for an owner to communicate with their dog, especially when calling them to come. This selective deafness actually means selective hearing, so you can never be completely sure whether your dog is ignoring you or not. For this reason, it is important to train your dog at a young age to earn respect.
Beagle Personality
The main characteristics are loving, curious, and friendly. It is very unusual for a Beagle’s personality to be aggressive or violent. However, they have a loud voice and are known for their deep howling. A good way to combat difficult behavior is to ensure your dog gets enough exercise and attention.
Along with their deep howling, they are known for having ‘musical voices.’ They tend to “sing along” with loud noises from outside, such as sirens or people walking past their house.
Beagles are explorers, and for this reason, it can be risky to let them off the leash. Again, once they have followed a scent, they will not give up. It will be quite difficult to get their attention once they are focused on something.
They can easily get distracted and quickly bored if they don’t receive proper stimulation and if they are not focused on following a scent.
A downside of Beagles as pack animals is that they can be prone to separation anxiety in dogs. This condition can have some unpleasant consequences, as they are likely to destroy things around them during their outburst of anxiety.
It is also known that they may bark and howl for a while when they have separation anxiety. This can be quite annoying for neighbors when the Beagle’s owner is away.
Cheerful and Everyone’s Friend
Many people who are about to get a dog, regardless of the breed, often wonder if a dog will get along well with other pets. Does a Beagle do well with another dog or even with a cat? It is likely that it will not cause any significant problems. The Beagle is curious but quickly learns its place in the home. It becomes a different story if there is a rabbit running around or a bird is in the living room. The nature of this dog breed is that it sees small animals as prey and therefore wants to chase them. This is hardly to be blamed on him, as it is in his nature.
It is originally a hunting dog, used to working in large groups. It therefore enjoys playing with other dogs, more than with smaller animals.

Also keep in mind that although Beagles were bred to work outdoors, they are not outdoor dogs. They need to live indoors and are happiest at home with their family. They love being treated as part of the family!
So make your Beagle part of your family. They are pack animals: once they leave their mother and litter, they need a new pack, and that’s where you come in.
Remember that the first 3 months of your Beagle’s life will be very important in shaping its personality. Your little friend will spend at least half, if not more, of that time with its breeder. But when your puppy comes home to you, it is your responsibility to take over and help your dog develop its best qualities.
