Pomeranians are known for their intelligence and learning ability, allowing them to quickly pick up new tricks and commands. Scott learned to sit and lie down on command within a few days.
The German Spitz is a sturdy dog, recognizable by its abundant coat, its ruff and its plumed tail. With its pointed ears, its head resembles that of a fox. The German Spitz comes in five sizes, from the largest (Wolfspitz) to the smallest (Toy Spitz, Pomeranian).
Here you see the difference between the German Spitz, which looks like a small fox, and the Pomeranian, which resembles a small bear. The German Spitz has longer ears, a more pointed muzzle, a finer bone structure and a less abundant coat. The Pomeranian has a more prominent forehead, a shorter, rounded muzzle, rounded ears and a double coat. The undercoat gives the long hair its volume, which makes him look like a cuddly ball.
Differences in temperament and living space
The difference between the Spitz and the Pomeranian is not only physical but also in their temperament and behavior. Spitzes are often more social and can better handle other dogs and people, while Pomeranians can sometimes be a bit more reserved. This can vary from dog to dog, but generally, the Spitz is a bit more relaxed in social situations. This often makes Spitzes more suitable for families with children. Additionally, Pomeranians tend to be a bit more protective of their owners, making them great watchdogs despite their small size.
Pomeranians may also need more attention in social situations to feel at ease. It is essential to socialize them early, so that they gain confidence in dealing with others.
Spitzes generally need more space, while Pomeranians adapt better to a smaller home such as an apartment. That does not mean a Pomeranian can do without daily walks and playtime.
