Types of Dachshund

“Half a dog high and a dog and a half long” as the legendary literary critic and humorous journalist H.L. Mencken says about the dachshund.

But don’t be fooled. This small dog is tough enough to attack a badger. This is where the name Dashund or dachshund comes from.

There are 3 different types:

  • The long-haired: crossbreed with spaniels and Irish setters
  • The wire-haired: crossbreed with various terriers and the Schnauzer
  • The smooth-haired: original type

And there are 3 different sizes:

  • Standard (chest circumference above 35 cm with a weight up to a maximum of 9 kg)
  • Dwarf (chest circumference from 30 to 35 cm with a weight ranging between 6 and 7 kg)
  • Kaninchen or mini dachshund (chest circumference up to 30 cm with a weight ranging between 4 and 5 kg)

Description Miniature Dachshund

Regardless of size, dachshunds are a wonderful addition to any family. That is also why they are so popular. Their unique appearance and lively character have inspired many people for their nicknames. Some examples: Wiener doghotdogsausage dogDoxieDashie.

You can’t help but smile when you look at a confident dachshund proudly with its long, muscular body on short legs, its elongated head held high with a bold, intelligent look in its eyes.

Due to their almost comical appearance, they have long been a beloved subject of cartoonists and toy manufacturers. But their cute appearance was developed for much more serious and practical reasons.

Their short legs allow them to dig through tunnels and maneuver to even fight badgers and other animals, while their large chest gives them plenty of “heart” for the fight.

Dachshunds are brave, but they can be somewhat stubborn and have an independent spirit, especially during hunting.

At home, the playful nature of the dachshund comes to the fore. He likes to be near you to ‘help’ you do things like tie your shoes.

Due to his intelligence, he often has his own ideas about what the rules are when it comes to playtime, and those rules may not be the same as yours or even other dog breeds.

They are known to be lively and enjoy chasing other small animals, birds, and toys.

The breed standard, a written description of how he should look and act, probably describes his personality best, saying: “He is clever, lively, and courageous to the point of recklessness, persistent in above- and below-ground work, with all senses well developed, any display of shyness is a serious fault.”

They have soulful eyes and complex facial expressions. Because of these things, dachshunds have a loud, deep bark that sounds like it comes from a much larger dog. And they like to bark, something you might consider if you have neighbors who might be annoyed rather than amused by the antics of your brave little dog.

The Dachshund is a powerful, muscular dog with short legs. It behaves proudly and has an intelligent expression. He has an elongated head, a long snout, robust jaws. The teeth in scissor bite with extremely strong canines (he usually has 42 teeth). His eyes are oval, dark red or brown-black with an energetic and friendly expression. His ears are long and hanging on his cheeks. His body should have a strong protruding breastbone and a moderately tucked-up belly. The smooth-haired coat should be shiny, smooth, and uniform. Two-colored dachshunds have a coat with areas of bright chestnut and deep black, brown, or gray.

History

Short-legged dogs have already been depicted in ancient Egyptian and Greek temples and in Chinese art. They are said to be descendants of the oldest German hunting dog breeds such as the Bibarhund or the German Bracke. Illustrations from the 13th century show the ancestors of the dachshund hunting badgers. They may have changed a bit since then, but no one doubts that they have existed for hundreds of years.

The dachshund was bred to hunt and track badgers in their burrows underground. With their short legs, they dug out the badgers and followed them into their burrow. For this, he has an excellent nose and great hearing. The smaller dachshunds were bred to hunt hares. He has many “terrier” characteristics. They are versatile and brave dogs and are known to go after foxes and otters in addition to badgers.

In 1888, the German breed association was founded for the smooth-haired variety. In 1880, the first breed standard was established in the United Kingdom. The Dachshund quickly spread and became a valued companion dog worldwide.

The wire-haired was created by crossing with the Dandie Dinmont Terrier and other terriersthe long-haired by crossing smooth-haired dachshunds with the Cocker Spaniel and the Stoberhund (an old German hunting dog).

Character traits of smooth-, wire-, and long-haired dachshunds

The smooth-haired has the most specific character traits. They are very affectionate dogs.
The wire-haired Dachshund is often a temperamental, energetic, and extroverted dog due to the terrier input.
The long-haired Dachshund is a somewhat calmer and gentle type.

Dachshunds are lively, hearty, and proud dogs. They are very devoted to their family.
They are good dogs to travel with.

They are at their best with older children. They generally get along well with other pets. They are quick to get jealous and when irritated they can bite.

The Dachshund can act wonderfully to get his way. They consciously seek eye contact. A puppy course is recommended. When the Dachshund is an adult, it becomes a very loyal dog.

Living conditions

Dachshunds are suitable for apartment living. They are quite active indoors and will do well without a yard. These are active dogs with surprising endurance and they love a regular walk or a game in the park.

They should not be overfed, as this dog breed tends to gain weight quickly.

Life expectancy

A nice age for a dachshund is 12-15 years.

Care

The long-haired variety requires daily combing or brushing. The wire-haired needs a semi-annual trim. The smooth-haired should occasionally be wiped clean with a damp cloth.

Dachshunds are known to have spinal problems due to their long back. This dog is therefore not a good choice for those with a house with many stairs. To further protect the Dachshund’s back, the dog should not jump on and off furniture and its weight should be monitored.
