The labradoodle is a dog that originated from crossing a labrador with a poodle. This makes for an ideal family dog. They were originally bred to serve as hypoallergenic assistance dogs.

It is a dog that sheds little or not at all, making it better suited for people with a dog allergy or those who prefer not to have their home covered in dog hair ;).

It is therefore not surprising that they are among the most popular dog breeds in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Australian labradoodle

The Australian labradoodle gets its name from its origin. It was first bred in Australia by a man named Wally Conran.

He wanted to breed an assistance dog with a hypoallergenic coat. The first generations were not entirely hypoallergenic yet. But generation after generation, he came closer and closer to his goal.

The breeds involved in the development, besides the Labrador and the Poodle, also include the Irish Water Spaniel, the Lagotto Romagnolo, the Curly Coated Retriever, and the American and English Cocker Spaniel

In our opinion, the Australian Labradoodle is a Labradoodle that is close to ideal in appearance and hypoallergenic qualities. The Australian Labradoodle is often mistakenly sold; for example, the Labradoodle club claims only their puppies are Australian, even though the breed is not officially recognized in Belgium. Furthermore, they neuter/spay all their puppies (very bad for puppies) to prevent others from breeding with them. Early neutering significantly increases the chances of, among other issues, (bone) problems.

Labradoodle

This breed comes in three different sizes. The mini Labradoodle is a fairly small dog that grows up to a maximum of 42 centimeters tall. The standard dog is solid and can reach up to 63 centimeters tall and weigh thirty kilograms. The medium size falls in between.

A mini labradoodle, also called a miniature labradoodle, is the smallest version. They are a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a miniature poodle. But also with the Lagotto Romagnolo or English Cocker. The only difference with the medium or large labradoodle is the size; everything else is exactly the same.

If you are looking for a mini labradoodle, it might be better to consider a toy poodle or a Italian Water Dog. You can groom them just like a labradoodle so that even an expert can’t tell the difference. In terms of personality, all three are similar, making them an excellent family dog.

Character

Labradoodles are always cheerful and exceptionally friendly to everyone. They are dogs that get along very well with children. That makes them extremely suitable as a service or therapy dog.

They enjoy the company of people and give a lot of love to their family. Additionally, they are particularly intelligent, making consistent training necessary. Finally, they are also an excellent choice if you already have other pets, as they get along well with cats and other animals.

Appearance & Features

Since they are not yet recognized dog breeds with established physical characteristics, dogs can vary considerably from one another.

  • Mini labradoodles are typically between 35-42 cm tall with a weight ranging from 7 to 14 kg.
  • Medium labradoodles are between 43-52 cm tall with a weight ranging from 14 to 23 kg.
  • Large labradoodles stand between 53 and 63 cm tall with a weight between 24 and 35 kg

Typical for this dog is its mostly non-shedding coat. Because of this, it usually sheds much less hair than other dog breeds, greatly reducing the risk of allergic reactions. The coat comes in various colors such as white, red, brown, black, silver, caramel, chocolate brown, apricot, and golden. Also, the texture of the coat can vary greatly. Some doodles have curls while others have long flowing hair or sometimes even short hair. In the latter case, they will shed!

Labradoodle Mini

Mini Labradoodles usually have a shoulder height of 35-42 cm and weigh between 7 and 14 kg. They have a playful and friendly appearance and are loved for their cute looks. Their coat can range from curly to wavy and requires regular grooming to prevent matting.

Labradoodle Medium

Medium Labradoodles have an average height of 43-52 cm and weigh between 14 and 23 kg. Their coat is usually woolly and can come in various colors, such as black, brown, white, or cream. The ears are floppy, and the eyes are expressive and friendly. Overall, medium Labradoodles have an athletic and well-proportioned appearance.

Labradoodle Large

Large Labradoodles are impressive dogs with a majestic presence. Standing between 53 and 63 cm tall and weighing from 24 to 35 kg, they have an imposing stature. Their coat is often lush and wavy, adding to their cuddly appearance. The large Labradoodle has a friendly face with kind eyes and an expressive look. Overall, they radiate a harmonious and balanced appearance, making them beloved companions for many dog lovers.

Exercising with the Labradoodle

Labradoodles are cheerful and energetic athletes who love to burn off their energy during the day. They are not only easy to train but also enjoy working for their owner. This makes them ideal for activities like agility, dog dancing, and dock diving. They also enjoy daily walks, playing in dog parks, swimming, and catching a frisbee. Due to their intelligence, they can get bored quickly, so it is crucial to vary activities and challenge them. You will be amazed by their resourcefulness and eagerness to learn.

Labradoodle with Children and Other Animals

The Australian Labradoodle is an ideal companion for families, especially those with children and other pets. It is essential to properly socialize the doodle, preferably from puppyhood, so they feel comfortable in various situations. With their friendly and curious nature, they fit perfectly into a family environment.

This dog naturally has a strong desire to please its owners and enjoys the attention it receives. Its love for playing extends not only to its owner but also to other people and animals. Additionally, the allergy-friendly coat of the Australian Labradoodle minimizes the risk of allergic reactions, making it an excellent choice for families with allergies.

History of the Labradoodle

The history of the labradoodle begins in 1989 in Australia, where Wally Conron created a crossbreed between a Labrador and a standard poodle. This initiative arose from the need to develop an allergy-friendly guide dog for a woman from Hawaii whose husband was allergic to dogs.

To enhance the desired traits, four other breeds were subsequently crossed: the English cocker spaniel, the Irish water spaniel, the American cocker spaniel, and the curly coated retriever. This resulted in a versatile mix producing labradoodles of various sizes and colors, due to the diverse backgrounds of the breeds involved.

Despite their popularity, Australian Labradoodles are not yet recognized by the FCI, meaning no official standard for purity and traits has been established. In Australia, special breeding centers have been set up to ensure the purity of bloodlines and limit illegal breeders, enforcing strict rules including the neutering or spaying of labradoodle puppies around nine months of age.

Care of Labradoodles

The care of the Australian Labradoodle depends on several factors, including coat type, length, and texture. Brushing should be done regularly, ranging from daily to biweekly, depending on the individual dog’s needs.

Around the age of 9 months, puppies often undergo a coat change, shedding their puppy fur and requiring thorough brushing and trimming. For some Labradoodles with fast-growing coats, regular visits to the groomer are necessary, typically every 8 to 12 weeks, to keep the coat in good condition.

Nutrition

The nutrition of Australian Labradoodles is crucial to support their energy levels and keep their coat healthy. It is important to choose high-quality food tailored to their specific needs.

The dietary needs of Labradoodles vary depending on their age, so specially formulated dog food is available for puppies, adult dogs, and senior dogs. Puppy food is rich in nutrients essential for growth and development, while adult dog food focuses on maintaining a healthy weight and good energy balance.

Nutrition for senior Labradoodles may include ingredients that help support joints and promote healthy aging. It is advisable to discuss a Labradoodle’s dietary needs with a veterinarian to ensure they receive the proper nutrition for optimal health.

Health

The health and well-being of Australian Labradoodles is a subject that has not been extensively studied due to their recent breeding history and the breed’s unrecognized status.

However, it is suspected that similar health issues may occur as seen in the Labrador Retriever and the Standard Poodle, the original breeds from which they were developed.

Despite their role as hypoallergenic dogs, Labradoodles can quickly develop allergies. Therefore, it is important to seek medical help promptly if symptoms such as ear infections or diarrhea appear.

Obtaining pet insurance can help cover unexpected high veterinary costs.

Although crosses like the Labradoodle are generally healthier due to the mixing of genes, it is still important to always first contact the breeder for advice and any health-related information about the puppy when health issues arise.

Also avoid unnecessarily taking your puppy to the vet after purchase. Because a healthy puppy can only pick up bacteria and viruses at the vet.
