History of the Pomeranian Dog
The official name of this glamorous breed is the Miniature Spitz, but in Belgium and the Netherlands, we often say ‘Pomeranian’ or even ‘pommetje’. This comes from a corruption of the English breed name ‘Pomeranian’.
The Miniature Spitz is a companion dog that originated in the 19th century. It was created by selecting the large Wolfspitz to smaller dogs, until we now have the Dwarf Pomeranian. The (wolf)spitz has been a popular watchdog for over 2400 years. The breed originally weighed between 9 and 13 kg, and through selective breeding, the Pomeranian dog was created.

It comes from the region Pomerania (hence the English name), a region between Poland and Germany. The breed became popular when Queen Victoria of England herself became the owner of a Pomeranian named ‘Marco’.
Breed Standard
Most Pomeranians have a short pointed snout. Their rounded pointed ears stand upright and close together. The not-so-long tail curls over the back. They have sturdy and straight legs that are of average length. The hind legs are slightly bent to be able to jump well. The feet are very small and round with arched toes.
The average life expectancy is between 11 and 14 years.
Colors
The Pomeranian comes in many different colors. The dog can have a solid color, such as black, gray, white, brown, and orange. Dilutions and tan markings are also allowed. Spotted spitz dogs have a white base color with colored patches all over the body. The eyes of a Pomeranian are always dark-colored. They are medium-sized, dark-rimmed, and on the oval side.

Character & Training
The main character traits of a Pomeranian are:
- Lively
- Cheerful and fun character, which is characteristic of our Pomeranians.
- Somewhat overconfident
- Intelligent
- Eager to learn
- Very loyal and affectionate to its family!
- Alert
- Energetic
- Sweet in character.
Social and Friendly
Miniature Spitz dogs are excellent watchdogs that are quick to bark. They are generally friendly and open to other dogs, such as Cocker Spaniels and Pomeranians. But due to their overconfident behavior, they think they can handle dogs that are bigger. You should protect them from this, so it is important that they are well-trained and socialized. A dog obedience course or agility can help.
A Miniature Spitz is a very smart little dog. They are independent and have a strong will. Many people fall in love with the breed after getting to know their character and eagerness to learn, they learn very quickly and they learn many tricks.
Playful and Active
With a Pomeranian, you will never be bored, this dog breed has a playful and active character. If a Miniature Spitz sees an opportunity to play with something, it will not hesitate, especially if it is well-socialized. Despite the small size, you get a lot of life in the house with this busybody who always comes across as cheerful and sweet.
Training
Small Spitz dogs, Pomeranians, or a Miniature Spitz are generally easy to train due to their intelligence and learning ability.
The two most important things you should teach your Spitz from a young age are:
- Teach them from a young age not to bark unnecessarily because a Miniature Spitz is known for their alertness.
- Teach them to interact with other dogs and especially not to confront a larger dog. They sometimes dare to act bigger than they really are.

Care
A Pomeranian requires an average amount of time for grooming. A good dog breeder will take good care of their dogs, unlike puppies in the illegal dog trade. Therefore, buy a puppy from a recognized breeder!
Coat Care
A Spitz dog sheds little hair, it stays in the fluffy coat. It is therefore also important to give a thorough combing every two weeks.
The Pomeranian has a so-called double coat. The undercoat is soft. It is important to take good care of it, otherwise, the skin may not be able to breathe properly. So spend enough time combing and brushing so that you have done all the places well. Both the collar, the legs, and the head.
Too much brushing can damage the coat. It is therefore important to find a good balance. When you brush well and regularly, a bath is not necessary. This also saves you a lot of effort and time.

Nutrition
Dry food is the best choice for a Miniature Spitz. Be careful about which kibble you buy and especially the nutritional values. One pack of dog kibble is not the same as another.
You can also choose fresh meat, although opinions are divided on this. Fresh meat can result in less stool and can even remedy some ailments such as intestinal problems and allergies.
Occasionally a bone made of natural hide is recommended as it is good for the teeth. You can use a treat for rewarding, but do this sparingly.
Also, read more about the Miniature Spitz nutrition guide.
Exercise
Small Spitz dogs and Miniature Spitz dogs are satisfied with short walks and love to play in the garden, but they can also accompany you for miles without getting tired.
They will love to walk: on the one hand to have exercise, on the other hand to steal the show. Poms always walk with a proudly raised head next to you, true show animals! During walks, you should keep in mind that Pomeranians like to play the boss and sometimes forget how small they are.
Dog Health
Frequency of vet visits: Only 1X/year (annual vaccination)
Whether a Miniature Spitz is healthy or not cannot always be known in advance. Therefore, once again: Buy a dog in trust and maintain good contact with your breeder. When problems arise with a dog, it is best to always notify the breeder. This information can be very important for their breeding programs, AND a good breeder can also provide more information about their dogs than any other vet. For this reason, we offer all owners a 24/7 service where someone is always reachable.
Health can, in short, be divided into two compartments. On the one hand, you have general health, whether or not free from viruses. And on the other hand, we look at the genetic part. What the puppy has inherited from both its mother and father (DNA, character, temperament, appearance, and other genetics)
For both cases, the breeder has some responsibility. General health is promoted by their environment (hygiene of the housing) and nutrition (both mother’s milk and quality food). Until the pup moves to its ‘Golden basket’, this is the responsibility of the breeder.
The genetics come from both the mother, father, and ancestors. Here too, we as breeders bear responsibility. For example: A female with Patella Luxation or a male with Hip Dysplasia is excluded from our breeding programs.
That does not mean that your dog cannot get HD or PL when both parents are free, but it does mean that the chance is drastically reduced. Also, their environment after weaning (leaving the mother) is of great importance. A dog can still develop bone problems due to its growth, which can be influenced by neutering/spaying at too young an age. It may even be that the use of various products against fleas/ticks/pests develops epilepsy. We then call this not a genetic but a developed problem. Here too, in our eyes at least, the breeder has the responsibility to warn their potential customers about the risks involved.
A good breeder not only shares information about a Miniature Spitz and its character but goes further. A good breeder knows their parent animals with or without a pedigree, provides information about the health of their puppies, and remains accessible to their customers to assist them in the future.
When you visit a Miniature Spitz kennel where they tell you to contact your vet when you have a problem, how professional do you rate that breeder?
