The Pomsky is a charming designer dog that originated from a cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, resulting in a medium-sized dog with the striking blue eyes and thick double coat pattern of a Husky in a more compact form. This relatively new hybrid, which first appeared in the early 2000s, has quickly gained popularity due to its attractive appearance and energetic, intelligent character that combines the playfulness of the Pomeranian with the adventurous spirit of the Husky. With their thick coat that sheds seasonally, regular brushing and professional grooming are required, while their high energy level requires daily exercise and mental stimulation to prevent behavioral problems. Understanding their unique temperament, training needs, and potential health challenges that may arise from both parent breeds will help you successfully integrate this lively and loyal companion into your family life.

Physical characteristics

Pomskies are characterized by their compact, well-balanced bodies that combine the appearance of a miniature Siberian Husky with the elegance of a Pomeranian. Their distinctive physical features vary significantly due to the crossbreeding, with a shoulder height ranging from 30 to 40 centimeters and a weight between 10 to 14 kilograms. Their unique coat is thick, soft, and silky with a double-layer structure consisting of a dense undercoat and protective topcoat. This coat can have various colors: white, black, gray, brown, cream, or reddish hues, often in combinations with typical Husky markings like a facial mask.

The head of the Pomsky is proportionally shaped with small, triangular erect ears and expressive almond-shaped eyes. Their eye color ranges from dark brown to bright blue, with heterochromia (different colored eyes) also possible – a legacy of the Siberian Husky. The curled tail is usually carried over the back, contributing to their charming, cuddly appearance.

Temperament and Character

You will find that the Pomsky exhibits a very energetic and playful character, combining the cheerfulness of the Pomeranian with the loyalty and intelligence of the Siberian Husky. Their social and friendly nature makes them excellent companion dogs that form strong bonds with their owners and family members. They are intelligent and eager to learn, which makes them relatively easy to train, although they can sometimes show the stubbornness of the Pomeranian. Additionally, their alertness and vigilance enable them to be effective watchdogs, alerting their family to strangers, although they are rarely aggressive.

The Pomsky has a strong protective instinct and can be wary of strangers, but with proper socialization from a young age, they develop into friendly, well-adjusted dogs. Their energetic nature requires regular mental and physical stimulation – they love long walks, games, and interactive activities.

Energetic and playful

The Pomsky inherits the lively temperament of both parent breeds and shows a constant desire for activity and movement. These energetic dogs need at least one hour of intensive exercise daily, ranging from brisk walks to interactive games. Their playful nature makes them excellent companions for families with children, as they love to participate in all kinds of activities. Without sufficient physical and mental stimulation, Pomskies can develop destructive behavior, such as barking, digging, or destroying household items. Their athletic abilities and endurance make them suitable for dog sports like agility or frisbee. A happy Pomsky is a Pomsky that can expend its energy in constructive, challenging activities.

Intelligent and Eager to Learn

The high intelligence of the Pomsky, inherited from both the Husky and the Pomeranian, makes them quick learners who easily pick up commands and tricks. Their sharp mind also means they constantly test their boundaries and find creative ways to circumvent rules. These dogs respond best to positive reinforcement methods and short, varied training sessions that keep their attention. Their eagerness to learn can also manifest in problem-solving behavior, such as learning how to open cabinets or find escape routes. Consistency in training is essential, as their intelligence allows them to recognize inconsistencies in their owners and take advantage of them. With the right guidance, they develop into well-trained, obedient family dogs.

Loyal and Affectionate

Pomskies are extremely devoted to their owners and develop intense emotional bonds with their family members. This strong attachment means they prefer to be constantly near their family and can suffer from separation anxiety when left alone. Their affectionate nature is expressed in seeking physical contact, following their owner around the house, and desiring constant interaction. This loyalty makes them excellent companion dogs, but it also requires owners to invest time in gradually getting them used to being alone. Pomskies can be extremely protective of their favorite family members and may react jealously to other pets or people receiving attention. Their devoted nature ensures they form a lifelong, deep bond with their family.

Alert and Vigilant

The Pomsky has a naturally developed warning system and responds alertly to unfamiliar sounds, movements, or people in their environment. Their sharp senses and vigilant attitude make them excellent watchdogs that timely alert their family to potential threats. This vigilant behavior is mainly expressed in barking, where they distinguish between familiar and unfamiliar situations. Although they are alert, Pomskies are rarely aggressive and function more as an alarm system than as true guard dogs. Their vigilance can sometimes become excessive, especially if they are not well socialized, which can lead to constant barking at normal daily events. With proper training, they learn when their vigilance is desired and when they can relax.

Social but Cautious

Pomskies have a naturally social disposition and enjoy interaction with people and other animals, but they initially approach new situations with healthy caution. This cautious attitude towards strangers is not a sign of fear, but rather of wisdom, as they take time to assess new people and situations. With good socialization from puppyhood, they learn to turn their natural reserve into friendly, confident behavior. Their social needs are high – they require regular interaction with their family and can become lonely if left alone too much. In familiar environments and with trusted people, they show their true, exuberant personality. Their ability to read social cues makes them excellent family dogs that adapt to the moods and needs of their owners.

Health

Frequency of vet visits: Only 1X/year (annual vaccination)

We can hear some people saying it already, without them actually saying it: Such a small dog (Pomeranian) that has to ‘cover’ such a large dog (Husky), that can’t be healthy. Well, nothing could be further from the truth. You obviously can’t breed the other way around, the father is preferably smaller than the mother. But because we ‘create’ a crossbreed, we use a double database of genes. Namely those of the Siberian Husky and the Pomeranian.

Our genetic material is therefore doubled. This is important to eliminate inbreeding, because the risk of inbreeding is precisely that the genetic difference between mother and father becomes too small and you get a chance of genetic abnormalities.

So we take all the sensitivities of the Husky and those of the Pomeranian with us to our pups. Only, you can drastically reduce the chance of this. So you supposedly get a larger list of possible abnormalities, but the chance of these abnormalities decreases enormously. That’s why we say a Pomsky is healthier than a purebred dog.

As a breeder, you obviously have to take your precautions and only continue with healthy parents. For example, a Siberian Husky is checked for hips (HD) and eyes (cataracts, glaucoma) and a Pomeranian is mainly focused on knees (Patella Luxation). When breeding a Pomsky with two Pomsky parents, we therefore take into account HD, PL, cataracts, and glaucoma.

Training and Socialization Tips

To ensure that your Pomsky develops good behavior and social skills, it is essential to implement a structured training and socialization program early in their life. Use a balanced training method that includes both reward for desired behavior and correction for undesired behavior – reward your dog immediately with treats, praise, or play when they perform commands correctly, but also be clear and consistent in correcting undesired behavior when necessary. The high intelligence of the Pomsky means they quickly learn what is and isn’t acceptable, but also that they will test boundaries – therefore clarity and consistency are crucial for effective training.

Early socialization is vital for Pomskies due to their natural caution towards strangers. Gradually expose your puppy to different people, animals, sounds, and environments between 8-16 weeks, rewarding positive experiences and correcting unwanted behavior immediately. Organize controlled playdates with other dogs and take your Pomsky to puppy socialization classes, learning when intervention is needed to set boundaries.

Keep training sessions short but frequent – about 10-15 minutes several times a day works better than long sessions. Focus on basic commands like “sit,” “stay,” “come,” and “leave it” from a young age, and clearly show your approval for correct behavior and your disapproval for disobedience. By adopting a fair but firm approach that includes both reward and correction, your Pomsky will develop into a well-adjusted, respectful companion who clearly knows what is expected of them.

Exercise Needs

Pomskies are adaptable dogs that can adjust well to different lifestyles and activity levels. A daily walk of 30 to 45 minutes is usually sufficient to keep them happy and healthy, although they are certainly capable of more intense activities if you prefer. Their compact size makes them suitable for both apartment living and homes with large gardens.

These intelligent dogs often appreciate mental stimulation as much as physical exercise – a good training session, puzzle toys, or a new route during the walk can be enough to satisfy them. Pomskies are flexible companions that enjoy participating in family activities, whether it’s a leisurely walk around the neighborhood or a more active hiking trip on the weekend.

Their energy level varies per individual – some Pomskies are more relaxed and content with moderate activity, while others are more adventurous. The key is consistency in daily exercise and attention, not necessarily intensity. With their adaptability and intelligence, most Pomskies easily find their place in different family situations, from active athletes to more relaxed households.

How much does a Pomsky cost?

Pomsky price list

The cost of a Pomsky puppy varies from breeder to breeder. Rarely is there a price difference between a male and a female. A normal price for a Mini Husky is between € 1500 and € 3000.

The more a Pomsky resembles in markings a Husky and in fur (volume) a Pomeranian, the higher its price will be. We try not to deviate too far from the proposed 12 to 15 KG to ensure not to go too small.

The price of a Pomsky is determined by several different factors with us. But it should not be determined by health. Whether a dog costs one euro or 10,000 euros, health must be guaranteed at all times.

Age is the biggest factor why a particular breeder would lower their price. If a breeder receives a visitor, each of their dogs should have an equal chance of being ‘chosen’. And price is simply a decisive factor for many.

Additionally, you often find dogs at ridiculously low prices, up to a difference of 50%. Often it is not only about older ‘pups’, they usually originate from Eastern Europe and you cannot visit a mother animal.

And finally, beauty. We also surf the internet and see what ‘competition’ sometimes offers as a ‘Pomsky’ or a ‘Mini Husky’. Far from what we aim for with our breeding program. This sometimes makes it frustrating for us to get the question of why we are ‘more expensive’ than some other “breeders” (read: sellers/traders) …

Finding a good Pomsky kennel, in Belgium

Pomskies and Mini Huskies are not found just anywhere. Yet they are highly sought after. This means that many will use lures or even go so far as to sell a real Husky, only to say it’s a Mini Husky…

  1. Have trust: When talking to a breeder, also think about whether you would still want to maintain contact with that person when needed. Who will you contact when a problem arises? Would you not contact the person in question but immediately place your dog under the care of a veterinarian? Then it seems to us that you have made the wrong choice.
  2. Visit the mother animals: No mother animals to see? Then your dog is from another breeder. You are not at a breeder but at a dealer. You do not know where your dog comes from and will always have questions.
  3. Ask your questions: Do not be afraid to ask too many questions, or to ask a ‘stupid’ question. A passionate breeder loves to talk about their profession. If they do not answer your questions in advance, they certainly will not do so afterward.
  4. Pay attention to the dogs: Do you see anything abnormal, something that makes you doubt? Doubts = problems. A healthy puppy has a shiny coat and is playful. Although that playfulness sometimes needs a little trust first.
  5. Do not take a puppy just to take a puppy: Fall in love with a puppy, set yourself aside for a moment and get to know a puppy. When you have a click, then choose a puppy. Do not take a puppy because you have already taken a vacation. Possibly just put yourself on a waiting list.
  6. Pay attention to the environment: Clean housing for the dogs is crucial. Feel free to ask where the parent animals stay when they do not have pups.

The minimum age to acquire a dog for Belgian pups is eight weeks. When you want to get a dog from abroad, it must be at least fifteen weeks old and have a rabies vaccination. For the socialization and training of a Pomsky, it is best to purchase a puppy around the minimum age and with a Belgian origin.

It is a noble act to want to adopt a Pomsky from a shelter, but be aware that these are often dogs with a manual. We advise considering this only when you have a lot of experience or when you already have another dog.

Pomsky: Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a Pomsky live on average?

The life expectancy of your Pomsky typically ranges from 12 to 15 years, influenced by factors such as genetics, diet, and overall quality of care. Due to their cross between Pomeranian and Siberian Husky, they can benefit from hybrid vigor, which often contributes to good health. A balanced diet and sufficient exercise are essential for a long and healthy life.

Pomskies generally exhibit a friendly and playful temperament, making them excellent with children when properly socialized. Their affectionate nature promotes strong family bonds, as they love to participate in family activities and enjoy interaction with all family members. Their compact size makes them less overwhelming for younger children than larger breeds, while still being robust enough for active play. Early socialization and training ensure they learn how to interact calmly and friendly with children of all ages.

Pomskies adapt excellently to apartment living thanks to their compact size and adaptability. Their medium-sized stature (25-40 cm) makes them very suitable for smaller living spaces, provided they receive sufficient daily exercise through walks and playtime. Their intelligent and social nature ensures they value time with their family more than large spaces. With a consistent routine of daily walks and mental stimulation, Pomskies can entertain themselves well in an apartment and are often calm indoors when their basic needs are met.

Pomskies require high-quality nutrition rich in animal proteins and tailored to their energy level and age. It is important to initially continue feeding the same diet that your puppy was accustomed to at the breeder, to prevent stomach issues and stress. After an adjustment period of a few weeks, you can gradually transition to your desired diet by slowly mixing the new kibble with the familiar food over a period of 7-10 days. Preferably choose food that is suitable for their weight class and activity level, and be mindful of their tendency to gain weight by carefully measuring portions and limiting treats.
