Belgian Breeds

Belgian dog breeds are breeds that originated in Belgium. Read on for more information about each Belgian breed.

Bloodhound

Belgische puppy's

The bloodhound is sometimes also called the Saint Hubert’s hound. It is a hunting dog, just like the Beagle, but a bit larger.

They also have poorer health than a Beagle and typically live about 5 years less than a Beagle.

Bouvier des Ardennes

Bouvier des ardennes

The Bouvier des Ardennes or Ardennes cattle dog is a breed used as a herding dog and watchdog. They stand between 54 to 59 cm tall.

Bouvier des Flandres

Bouvier des flandres

The Bouvier des Flandres, also known as the Flemish cattle dog, is a breed originally bred as a drover, sheepdog, and draft dog.

Nowadays, they are also popular as guard dogs, police dogs, or as a pet.

Pagneul nain continental

The Continental Toy Spaniel, or continental dwarf spaniel, is a Belgian-French dog breed. It comes in two varieties: the butterfly dog and the less common night butterfly dog.

The only difference between the two is the shape of the ears. The butterfly dog has large upright ears that resemble a butterfly (papillon). The similarly large ears of the night butterfly dog hang down (phalne = moth). Both types can appear in the same litter.

Griffon Belge

Griffon belge

The Griffon Belge is distinguished by its coat color from the rough-haired Griffon Bruxellois and by its rough coat texture from the Petit Brabançon.

The Griffon Belge has a small, square body structure with a rough coat in the colors black, black with tan (black & tan), and black mixed with reddish-brown.

Griffon Bruxellois

Belgische huisdieren

The Griffon Bruxellois is distinguished by the red coat color of the black Griffon Belge and by its rough coat texture from the short-haired Petit Brabançon.

The Griffon Bruxellois has a small, square body structure with a red and coarse rough coat.

Groenendaeler

Groenendaeler

The Groenendaeler, also spelled Groenendaler, is one of the Belgian shepherds. It is named after Groenendaal in the Belgian municipality of Hoeilaart near Brussels.

Like all Belgian shepherds, it is used as a guard and family dog. The coat is long-haired and the color of the Groenendaeler is always black. Its shoulder height is 58 to 62 centimeters, and it weighs 20 to 30 kilograms.

Laekense shepherd

Laekense herder

The Laekense shepherd, also spelled Lakense shepherd, is the rough-haired variety of the Belgian shepherds. It is named after the Brussels suburb of Laken. It is the least commonly found of all Belgian shepherds.

It is a courageous and alert dog, which in terms of enthusiasm for work, intelligence, and agility is certainly not inferior to the other Belgian shepherds. It has a fairly dominant nature and is very attached to its own ‘pack’.

Mechelse shepherd

Mechelse herder

The Mechelse shepherd, also called Mechelaar, is one of the varieties of Belgian shepherds. It is named after the Belgian city Mechelen.

The Mechelen shepherd is a vigilant and active dog. Besides its innate suitability as a herd guardian, it possesses the qualities of a watchdog for the home and yard.

Petit Brabanon

Petit brabanon

The petit brabanon (small Brabanter) is a small dog breed originating from Belgium.

The petit brabanon differs only by its short coat structure from the rough-coated Griffon Bruxellois and the rough-coated Griffon Belge.

The petit brabanon has a small, square build with a short, smooth, and shiny coat in colors red, black, black with tan (black & tan), and black mixed with reddish brown.

Schipperke

Schipperke

The Schipperke is internationally the name of a Belgian dog breed originally. It belongs to the herding dog family and is the smallest herding dog in the world.

The breed club in Belgium, the ‘Royal Schipperkes Club’, was founded in 1888 and is therefore the oldest cynological association in the country.

Tervuren shepherd

Belgische hondenfokkers

The Tervuren shepherd, also spelled Tervurense or Tervuurse shepherd, belongs to the group of Belgian shepherds. It is named after the municipality of Tervuren, near Brussels.

The Tervuren shepherd, like its close relative the Groenendaeler, must get used from an early age to children and other pets. This will cause no problems later. They are affectionate and prefer to be close to their owner.
