History
The Lagotto romagnolo is an Italian water dog that has been around since the 16th century. The breed comes from the Emilia-Romagna region of Northern Italy. The inhabitants of the flat wetlands were called “vallaroli” or “lagotti”. The variety name Lagotto Romagnolo was derived from this.
This dog was used as a hunting dog in the swamps before the 19th century. From the 19th century his function as a hunting dog ceased and eventually the hunting instinct disappeared. Even if it is still present if it is stimulated.
After that, the variety was recruited as a truffle hunter in the area. Due to all kinds of circumstances, the breed was in danger of disappearing. Breeding of the breed began until the late 1970s.
Character
This breed is reluctant to other people and new experiences. It is therefore important to start socialization at a young age.
Therefore, buy a Belgian puppy of 8 weeks old. Foreign puppies are 15 weeks old, which is too old for this breed to be properly socialized. In older puppies, the reluctance can turn into fear, which is certainly not good.
As with other dog breeds, this dog breed needs good guidance in raising the puppy. Patient repetition is essential for a good upbringing.
The older the dog gets, the less you can spend time raising and having more fun. Of course, the dog must clearly know who is in charge.
He needs a lot of exercise. He also wants to work for his owner, he will love to learn how to retrieve. And once he has learned to swim, he will happily take a swim in every pond.
To humans, this is a delightful house dog who likes to be pampered by his family. But that won’t be difficult with its great cuddly factor.
Grooming
The Lagotto Romagnolo is a dog breed that does not shed. That makes it more suitable for people with an allergy to dogs.
The coat tends to tangle. So you will have to detangle regularly. A haircut at a dog groomer will also have to be done about 4 times a year. Another option is to learn to cut yourself, this will also increase the bond with your dog. Also, don’t forget to trim the hair growth in the ears.
Health
The Lagotto Romagnolo is a dog breed with little to no hereditary conditions. So you can say that this dog breed is a healthy one.
