Low-barking dogs: Which bark the least?

minst blaffende honden

Like people, dogs all have their own personalities, and some are simply more relaxed than others. But a dog’s breed can also tell you a lot about the issues you may encounter before you take on the joyful task of bringing them to their new forever home.

Dogs that bark little are usually companion dogs. Some examples are French Bulldog, Shiba Inu, Goldendoodle. Teach your dog from puppyhood not to bark if you find it bothersome!

Corgis, for example, were bred to herd livestock, such as sheep and cattle, and they are excellent watchdogs, so barking is in their blood (as is apparently chasing people who jog in circles around them and barking).

French Bulldogs, however, were bred as companion dogs and are therefore much more content to simply sit on your lap and give you their calm affection.

Dogs That Bark Less

Basenji

Basenji

The breed that originated as a hunting dog in Central Africa is also known as the “barkless” dog, because they produce a yodel-like sound (commonly called a “baroo”) instead of a traditional bark.

Shiba Inu

Shiba Inus were originally bred for hunting in Japan, and they have a dignified, aloof demeanor. Although they are not known for frequent barking, they can produce a high-pitched sound known as the “Shiba scream” when they are treated in a way they find unacceptable.

Goldendoodle

There is a reason why these dogs are so often used as therapy animals. Originally bred to retrieve shot waterfowl, they have a natural desire to please and are very easy to train.

French Bulldog

French Bulldogs appeared in 19th-century France as a mix between an English Bulldog and small dogs that were used for vermin hunting in Paris. They soon became very popular in high society as loyal companions who did not make much fuss.

French Bulldogs are dogs that bark very little.
